AXS TV announced today that veteran national television sports journalist Max Bretos will serve as play-by-play announcer and MMA superstar Julianna Peña will provide in-depth color commentary for the Network’s English-language broadcasts of the world’s premier Hispanic Mixed Martial Arts franchise Combate Americas.
The network also announced today that it will present a trio of Best Of Combate Americas specials kicking off on Friday, Dec. 6 at 10pE/7pP, with a 60-minute preview of “Tito Vs. Alberto – What Side Are You On?” — an inside look at the much-anticipated showdown between MMA trailblazer Tito Ortiz and multiple-time WWE Heavyweight Champion Alberto “El Patrón” Rodriguez (formerly “Alberto Del Rio” of the WWE) that takes place on December 7.
The following two specials will air on Friday, Dec. 20 at 10pE/7pP (90-minute program), and on Friday, Dec. 27 at 10pE/7pP, and will cover the 2018 “COPA COMBATE” one-night, eight-man, $100,000 grand prize tournament and the most exciting Combate Americas fights from 2019, respectively.
Max Bretos is an acclaimed sports reporter and announcer, credited as a driving force in advancing ESPN’s Hispanic presence. Bretos has worked with sports outlets such as Fox Sports, ESPN, WWE, and Sky Sports, and is currently the lead broadcaster for LAFC (Los Angeles Football Club).
Bretos has been calling Combate Americas action in English in a play-by-play role since 2018, working with Peña and a number of guest color commentators that have joined the duo in the booth.
Peña is a top 5 world-ranked bantamweight fighter with over 10 years of competitive experience in MMA. In 2013, she made history as the first woman in history to win The Ultimate Fighter competition reality television series
AXS TV is slated to air 35 live Combate Americas events in 2020 as part of the popular AXS TV Fights Friday Night primetime block.
