Boxer Patrick Day has passed away. He was 27. The former WBC continental Americas super welterweight champion, 2012 Golden Gloves champion, and a 2012 Olympic alternate was competing on the card of Oleksandr Usyk’s heavyweight debut against Chazz Witherspoon. He was knocked down twice by opponent Charles Conwell before falling to a massive left hook in the tenth round.
“Patrick Day passed away today, October 16, 2019, succumbing to the traumatic brain injury he suffered in his fight this past Saturday, October 12, at the Wintrust Arena in Chicago, IL,” promoter Lou DiBella wrote in a statement.
Conwell had spoken about the fight earlier this week, posting on Instagram: “I never meant for this to happen to you. All I ever wanted to do was win. If I could take it all back I would no one deserves for this to happen to them… I replay the fight over and over in my head thinking what if this never happened and why did it happen to you.”
Day was a native of Freeport, New York, with a boxing record of 17-4-1 with six knockouts.
