Former WBC continental Americas super welterweight champion, 2012 Golden Gloves champion, and a 2012 Olympic alternate Patrick Day, 27, remains in a coma Monday following a brutal knockout at the hands of Charles Conwell on the card of Oleksandr Usyk’s heavyweight debut against Chazz Witherspoon on Friday.
Day was knocked down twice before falling to a massive left hook in the tenth round. His head bounced off the canvas and he was rendered instantly unconscious, despite his eyes remaining open. He was immediately transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and reportedly suffered a seizure in the ambulance.
He was intubated and underwent brain surgery Friday before being placed in a medically induced coma to minimize the risk of damage while his brain swelling goes down.
