A fundraiser has been set up to raise money toward the final medial expenses for boxer Patrick Day, as well as to provide financial support for his mother.
Day, 27, passed away Oct. 16, from injuries sustained in the ring four days earlier. After being knocked out during a fight, he suffered a seizure and underwent emergency brain surgery before being placed in a medically induced coma. Unfortunately the damage was too extensive and Day succumbed to his injuries.
Writing for the GoFundMe page, Patrick Aristhene said, “It is no secret that Patrick was a special soul and his love and warmth was felt by all who came across him. From mentoring young children in the Freeport PAL boxing gym, to going down to local schools and speaking words of inspiration and encouragement to young people. Patrick always made the time and effort to add something positive to the world he was in. We are all lucky to have had someone like him on this earth for the time that we did. And even if you never met him, to see the amount of people hurt by his lose should be testimony as to the type of person he was.”
The Day family has called for “those in power in the boxing community” to make good on their promises to support the family in the wake of their loss, and change the sport to make it safer for fighters.
