A popular figure on the Boynton Beach MMA circuit has passed away. Angel Corchado, 33, was the sole victim of a single-vehicle collision on the I-95 exit ramp to 6th Avenue at 2:39 a.m. on Saturday, January 11, 2020. His 2014 Chevrolet Sonic hit a traffic light pole and Corchado, who was not wearing a seatbelt, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Originally from Brooklyn, Corchado moved to Florida around 2010 to train at American Top Team in Coconut Creek, home of many professional MMA fighters. He later trained and worked at Nine Rounds Gym in Boynton Beach, and then as one of the main MMA instructors at Combat Club. Danny Valentine, owner of Combat Club, spoke of how Corchado was looking forward to an upcoming fight. “He was looking forward to getting back in there. He was saying how he felt better than he has ever felt.”
Corchado, known as “El Jefe,” taught his last class at the gym Friday. Valentine paid tribute to the talented teacher. “He was really taking a role as one of the leaders here and owning that role. He said he wanted teaching to be his life.″
