The strawweight bout scheduled between Claudia Gadelha and Alexa Grasso for the main card of UFC 246 was canceled this morning after Grasso came in a full 5.5lb over the non-championship limit. The Nevada State Athletic Commission ruled her ineligible to compete, dashing hopes of a catchweight bout.
According to Jeff Mullen from the NSAC, strawweight competitors must be within 3lb of each other for the fight to be sanctioned. “The differential between Claudia and Alexa was six pounds,” Mullen said. “At that weight class there’s only a three-pound weight differential allowance. It was six pounds. So, in consultation with our legal counsel, we could not allow her to fight. Also, there was some other issues that we had, some medical issues. So, she will not be allowed to fight.”
It’s unclear if Gadelha will receive any payment from the UFC.
